A septic tank is the main component in common septic system. In doing complete maintenance it is also important to include the other to basic components, the drain field and the soil.

Chemicals depending on its effect on the natural biological activity inside the tank are controlled. Disinfectants as much as possible are to be used for minimal amount to avoid killing the beneficial anaerobic bacteria in the tank during the septic tank maintenance. Solid materials flushed down the drains significantly raise the accumulation of solid wastes in the bottom of the tank. While non organic substances may just add up to the bulk of waste in the tank. Periodic pumping of these wastes is needed to avoid the tank being full.
The drain field's condition is also essential. In using the gravity to direct the flow of liquid wastes, these drain pipes are located below the water escape route in the septic tank. These are distributed widely in a large area in the soil with depth depending on the class of soil beneath them. Both the tank and the drain field's position must not be placed under a drive way to avoid damage due to constant pressure. It is also important in septic tank maintenance that both of the tank and the drain field not be located near a tree to avoid roots seeping into the pipe that may cause damage or blockage.
The soil, while not so complex to maintain is nevertheless important too. The class of soil beneath the tank and drain field greatly affects the septic tank maintenance. The nutrients, chemicals and organisms present in the soil may actually affect effectiveness of the septic system.
Maintenance of these components must be done properly and not one must be left out since they work in a system. Failure in maintenance of any of the component of the septic system may actually lead to failed septic tank maintenance.
