I have been working on a lightweight mailing list handler written in PHP with a MySQL backend. The goal is to provide a self hosted alternative to services like Mailman or Sympa, but with a much smaller footprint and easier setup for shared hosting environments. The core features include list creation and management via a web interface, subscriber moderation (open, closed, or moderator approval), plain text and basic HTML message distribution, bounce handling, and searchable archives stored in the database. I am trying to keep the codebase clean and modular, using prepared statements for all database queries and PHPMailer for reliable message sending.
Right now I am in the early testing phase and would love feedback from anyone who has run a mailing list before. What features do you consider essential? Is archive search important enough to justify full text indexing in MySQL, or would simple subject/date filtering suffice? Also, how important is integration with external authentication systems like LDAP or OAuth? The project is not yet public on GitHub, but I am happy to share snippets or discuss architecture choices. For those interested in deeper learning about PHP and MySQL application design, you might find useful resources at https://cursus-brzo.nl/. Looking forward to any thoughts or experiences you can share.
