The Austrian Health Ministry said in a press release that people must switch their face coverings to FFP2, also known as KN95, N95 or P2, filtering masks or higher when on public transportation, in carpools, cable cars and cog railways, as well as at indoor and outdoor markets, restaurants, accommodation establishments, customer service businesses and administrative buildings. The mask mandate applies to anyone 14 years and older. Children under 14 years old are permitted to wear mouth and nose coverings and those under 6 do not need to cover their face.
In addition to stricter mask requirements, the social distance minimum has increased from 3 feet to 6 1/2 feet.
"The improved protection of the population through the FFP2 protective mask and the doubling of the minimum distance are the right answers to the mutations that are also spreading in Austria and causing an increased risk of infection. That needs better protection," Health Minister Rudi Anschober said.
The health ministry said in a statement that it has distributed approximately 1.2 million free masks to people "in a difficult social situation," including low-income, homeless and people over 65 years old. Additionally, large supermarket chains across the country will give the appropriate masks to their customers free of charge in the first few days of the requirement.
The health ministry reports more than 402,470 cases of COVID-19 and more than 7,410 deaths. The country currently reports 22,793 active cases. The coronavirus vaccines has been administered to approximately 170,000 people.
